Age Requirement
- You may begin classroom instruction at age 15 years, 9 months.
- To apply for a Class D (passenger vehicle) learner's permit, you must be at least 16.
- You can obtain a learner's permit at age 16, but you may not receive a Class D driver's license until you are at least 16 1/2 and have had your permit in good standing for six consecutive months and have completed a driver education training program approved by the Registrar.
The Commonwealth of Massachusetts requires that all drivers complete the following drivers education curriculum:
- 30 hours of classroom instruction
- 12 hours of behind-the-wheel training
- 6 hours of student driver observation
- 2-hour course for parents
Rhode Island law requires 33-hours of classroom driver education for individuals between the ages of 15 years, 10 months and 18 years of age. Students must be 15 years and 10 months of age by the first class. Students must attend all 33 hours!
